How to Optimize for Answer Engines (AEO): A 10-Point Scorecard for 2026

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring pages so ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features can extract a direct answer and cite you. Score each page on ten tests, 0 to 2 points each, for a total out of 20. Anything under 14 needs work, and the opening paragraph is the cheapest fix.

You can run this scorecard on one page today with a text editor and about 30 minutes. It is built from what the platforms document and what published citation studies show, not from guesswork. Where the evidence is thin, we say so.

Why AEO Needs Its Own Checklist

Ranking and being cited are different outcomes. Ahrefs compared 300,000 keywords (150,000 that triggered an AI Overview and 150,000 informational keywords that did not) between March 2024 and March 2025 and found the AI Overview cut position-one click-through by 34.5%. If the answer is shown above the links, the click goes to whoever is quoted in it.

Traffic from AI platforms is still small. Our AI search traffic benchmarks put ChatGPT at 0.32% of website traffic in May 2026 (SE Ranking) and all AI platforms together at about 1.08% (Conductor). That is a reason to run AEO as a low-cost layer on existing content, not to rebuild your site around it.

If you want the strategic background first, read our explainer on generative engine optimization. This post is the hands-on companion: a scorecard you can apply page by page.

The 10-Point AEO Scorecard

Score each test 0 (absent), 1 (partial) or 2 (done well). Add the totals. The table summarises the ten tests; the sections below explain how to pass each one.

NAMEX 2026 AEO Scorecard: ten tests, 0 to 2 points each
#TestPassing standard (2 points)
1Answer-first opening40 to 60 words, self-contained, contains the primary keyword
2Question-style headingsH2s phrased the way people ask
3Specific, sourced factsNamed source and date beside every number
4Extractable structureTables and short lists for comparisons and steps
5FAQ block with matching schema3 to 5 real questions, JSON-LD matches visible text
6Crawl and index accessNot blocked, rendered as text, in the sitemap
7Author and brand clarityWho wrote it, who the company is, where it operates
8Freshness signalsVisible modified date and current-year facts
9Internal link depthDescriptive links to related posts and service pages
10Off-site corroborationOthers describe you the same way

Reading your total: 16 to 20 is in good shape, 11 to 15 has clear gaps, and 10 or below means the page is unlikely to be extractable. These bands are our own working thresholds, not an industry standard.

Step 1: Put the Answer in the First Paragraph

Open with a 40 to 60 word paragraph that answers the exact question in your headline and still makes sense if quoted alone. Include the primary keyword and one concrete number if you have one. Never open with scene-setting. An AI system choosing a passage to quote needs one that stands up without its neighbours.

Test: copy the first paragraph into a blank document. If a stranger could not tell what question it answers, score 0. If it answers but runs long or buries the number, score 1.

Step 2: Write Headings as Questions People Actually Ask

Rewrite vague headings such as “Overview” into the question the section answers. Use the phrasing from your sales calls, search console queries and the “People also ask” box. Each heading should be followed immediately by a direct answer, then supporting detail. This is the structure a retrieval system can match to a prompt.

Step 3: Replace Claims With Sourced Facts

Vague claims such as “costs vary widely” are not quotable. A sentence with a figure, a named source and a period is. Compare: “CTV is growing” versus a stated share with a source and date. Go through the page and tag every statistic with who published it and when. Delete any figure you cannot trace.

Our AI vs human ad creative benchmarks follow this rule: each number sits next to its source. That habit does more for AEO than any markup.

Step 4: Build Tables and Lists That Can Be Lifted Whole

Comparisons belong in a table with a caption, not in a paragraph. Steps belong in a numbered list. Give each table a named title in its caption so it can be cited by name. Keep cells short and every row complete; an empty cell is better than an invented one.

Step 5: Add an FAQ and Matching JSON-LD

End the article with three to five real questions and direct answers. Then add FAQPage JSON-LD that mirrors that text word for word. Google's documentation is clear that you do not need special schema to appear in AI features, and structured data must match visible content. Treat schema as hygiene that helps machines parse the page, not as a ranking lever.

Step 6: Confirm AI Crawlers and Search Can Reach the Page

Google states that to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that important content should be in text form. Check four things: robots.txt does not block the crawlers you want, the page is in your sitemap, the answer exists in the HTML rather than loading late through scripts, and no nosnippet or max-snippet directive is limiting the excerpt.

Step 7: Make the Author and the Business Obvious

State who wrote the page, who the company is, what it does and where it operates. Consistent naming across your site, profiles and press mentions helps systems resolve you as one entity. Founder-led pages tend to earn trust faster: on our own site, Ryan Roberts' profile is our best-performing page by click-through rate.

Step 8: Show Freshness Honestly

Display a visible last-updated date and refresh the facts when you change it. Updating the date without updating the content is worse than leaving it alone. Replace last year's figures, fix broken links, and note the period each statistic covers.

Step 9: Link Related Pages With Descriptive Anchors

Link from each page to two or three related posts and the relevant service page, using anchor text that describes the destination. Step 10: Earn Corroboration Off Your Own Site

AI systems lean on sources they already trust. Similarweb's analysis of nearly 600,000 citation events across ChatGPT and Google AI Mode in January and February 2026 found Wikipedia at 13.15% and Reddit at 11.97% of ChatGPT citations. The same article notes AI rarely cites homepages and favours deep pages that answer narrow questions.

For a brand, the practical read is modest: be accurately described where your buyers research, and publish deep, specific pages rather than relying on the homepage. Do not astroturf forums. Genuine participation and accurate third-party profiles are the only approach that holds up.

How to Run the Scorecard in One Afternoon

  1. Pick your five highest-impression pages from Search Console.
  2. Score each against the ten tests and record the totals.
  3. Fix tests scoring 0 first, starting with the opening paragraph and headings.
  4. Write ten prompts your buyers might ask and run them in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google. Record whether your pages are cited.
  5. Repeat the prompts monthly and log changes next to the scores.

Keep the log simple. Results vary by prompt and change over time, so look for direction across many prompts rather than reading anything into a single result.

What AEO Will Not Do

It will not fix a thin page, create demand or guarantee a citation. Google itself says meeting its requirements does not guarantee crawling, indexing or display. It also will not compensate for weak ranking pages: start with pages Google already trusts, and improve how they are structured.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimization is structuring your content so AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews can lift a clear answer from your page and cite it. It builds on SEO fundamentals but rewards direct answers, specific facts and clear structure over keyword density.

Do I need special schema markup to appear in Google AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond standard Search eligibility: the page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Structured data is still worth adding where it matches the visible text, but it is not a gate.

How long does it take to get cited by AI answer engines?

There is no reliable timeline, and anyone quoting a fixed number is guessing. Citation patterns shift between platforms and over time. Treat the scorecard as a recurring audit: fix, re-test the same ten prompts monthly and track whether your pages appear.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. Google says normal SEO fundamentals still apply to its AI features, and AI platforms send a small share of total traffic today. AEO is an extra layer on top of pages that are already crawlable, indexed and useful.
